False Obama ad again paints Romney as a pro-life extremist

For the second time in July, Barack Obama is running TV ads attempting to paint Mitt Romney as a crusading pro-life extremist, repeating charges independent watchdog groups classify as misleading or blatantly false.

The new advertisement, “Women’s Choices,” features a woman named Jenni saying: “I’ve never felt this way before, but it’s a scary time to be a woman. Mitt Romney is just so out of touch.”

A narrator claims, “Romney opposes requiring insurance coverage for contraception and Romney supports overturning Roe v. Wade. Romney backed a bill that outlawed all abortion, even in cases of rape and incest.” However Romney has explicitly stated that he supports such exceptions.

“We need to attack our problems, not a woman’s choice,” Jenni concludes.

The spot repeats claims made by an Obama campaign ad earlier this month entitled “Troubled,” assertions that observers say are deeply misguided.

“In its effort to appeal to women, the Obama campaign has twisted Romney’s position to a ridiculous degree,” stated, which rated the new advertisement “Pants on fire” on its Truth-o-Meter., an independent campaign watchdog run by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, said the same claim in the previous ad amounted to “twisting Romney’s abortion stance.”

According to, the Obama campaign is citing Romney’s professed support for the Republican Party platform, which called for a Human Life Amendment, as proof of its assertions. However, certain versions of the amendment allow for abortion in the cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother – exceptions Romney endorsed in a 2011 National Review article laying out his position on abortion.

Romney has supported such exceptions since he began calling himself pro-life in 2006.

The new spot is currently airing in the swing states of Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Virginia. It hits Colorado airwaves on Monday.

National Journal has noted the new commercial appears aimed at reversing Obama’s sliding approval rating among female voters, which has eroded by as much as 11 points since March.

For months, the Democratic Party has accused Republicans in general and Mitt Romney in particular of waging a “war on women.” However, Romney’s popularity with women rose during the same period.

Planned Parenthood, however, has been a stalwart supporter of the president and the broader Democratic Party, purchasing $1.4 million in attack ads against Mitt Romney this summer.

Portraying the presumptive Republican nominee as an anti-abortion extremist may prove difficult, given his history of changing his outlook on the topic. To date, he has shown little interest in campaigning on the issue, focusing on high unemployment and the economic fallout created by Barack Obama’s spending policies.
